He enlisted at Stratford, initially serving in 9 Kings Royal Rifle Corps before transferring to the Hampshires.

On 25th July 1916 the Battalion arrived at Poperinghe in the Ypres Sector, and then moved into the line near Potijze on 4th August. At approx. 22.00 on 8th August 1916 the Germans launched a concentrated gas and high explosive barrage on British lines. The Battalion was moved back to a support trench, but in spite of gas hoods, 14 were killed, died of gas poisoning or were found missing. 14 or so were wounded and nearly 40 others suffered the effects of gas.

John Rose was a victim of this gas and high explosive barrage.
